Today was Ms. Jeannette's second Western calligraphy lesson. She taught Ms. Mayano, a Senga (cutting paper) artist and me about importance when writing in Type style. It is to align the height of the letters.
First, we learned how to draft an even line with a pencil. There are three kinds of Calligraphy pens have fixed line width thicknesses: 2.5mm, 3.5mm, and 5mm. This is the biggest difference between a calligraphy pen and a calligraphy brush. So, we can draw an even draft line by marking it like a grid pattern without measuring with a ruler. By following this drafting line, we can draw Type style beautifully.
Next, she taught us a new rule: the angles at the beginning and end of each line should be parallel and aligned. In Japanese calligraphy, this is the same as the rule for square style script.
It was a fun lesson with a lot to learn!
今日はJeannette先生による2回目のWestern calligraphyレッスン。剪画アーティストの小野寺マヤノさんと一緒に学びました。
Type styleで書く時に大切なポイントは「文字の高さを揃えること」。
まず、鉛筆を使って下書き線を均一に引きます。カリグラフィペンは、2.5mm、3.5mm、5mmと線の太さが決まっているため、定規で測らなくても格子状に印をつけることで均一な下書き線を引くことができるんです。これは書道用の筆との大きな違いですね。この下書き線に沿って書けば、Type styeの文字を美しく書くことができるのです。
次に、線の始点と終点の角度を平行に揃えるという新しいルールを教えていただきました。これは、日本の書道でいうところの「楷書」のルールと同じです。
学びがたくさんある、とても楽しいレッスンでした！
