I like the idea of 守破離 (shu ha ri) when learning something new. 守 (shu) is translated literally defending or protecting, but in this case, it means to follow the basics. 破 (ha) means breaking. 離 (ri) is translated literally separating or leaving, and means releasing.
In the case of calligraphy, in terms of the first step 守, it is important to learn the basic knowledge and skills thoroughly at first, so that you strengthen the foundation. With the foundation, you can move on to 破 step by breaking the mold and adding your own ideas. In other words, you can find any hints or clues to express your individuality. After going through these two steps, you will be able to achieve the final step 離. It's like leaving the first mountain and trying adventure on the new and unknown mountain. Then your work can be called original.
However, I like to do it the exact opposite way, too. That is, you first look at an unknown mountain and say, "Looks fun! I want to explore this mountain." Then you can get motivated to look for a way to explore it. It may be a lot of trial and error as you climb up and down the different paths. But, you are less likely to give up by getting boring because you can explore with curiosity. Curiosity is never exhausted and the most powerful resource for learning!
