Last Friday was Jeannette's third Western calligraphy lesson. Ms. Mayano, a Senga (cutting paper) artist and me learned all the letters of the alphabet by following her writing from the previous lesson.
Next, she taught us that there are two ways to write the alphabet by itself: the basic and the arranged way. Interestingly, we were also taught that the writing way of each letter can change depending on the next letters. For example, when "a" and "b" are next to each other, they are written in the basic way separately, but when "a" and "e" are next to each other, the vertical line on the right side of "a" and the vertical line of "e" are written together.
In the case of Japanese calligraphy, when two letters are combined, the end of the last letter and the beginning of the next letter are sometimes written together using a continuous line (called Renmensen). Perhaps this skill used to combine letters horizontally in Western calligraphy are similar to those used in Japanese calligraphy. It is very interesting and I would like to ask her about it at the next lesson.
Finally, we wrote some words: Friend, Fairy tale, The quick brown fox, etc. After writing the basic form in type style, she told us that we could add thin lines like "serif" used in the Serif font. Also, she told us that we could arrange them any way we wanted, and showed us samples by drawing them freely.
I'm a beginner, so it's hard to arrange it creatively, but Western calligraphy's Serif is free and really elegant!
先週の金曜日は、Jeannetteさんによる3回目のWestern calligraphyのレッスン。剪画アーティストの小野寺マヤノさんと私の二人で学びました。まず、前回からの続きでアルファベットの練習。Jeannetteさんが実際に書くところをWebカメラを使って画面上に映してくださり、私たちはそれを見ながら必死についていきました。これでアルファベットのすべての文字を学び終わったことになります。
次に、アルファベットを単体で書くには、基本的な書き方とアレンジした書き方があることを教えていただきました。また、とても興味深いルールなのですが、隣り合う文字によって文字の書き方が変わる場合があることを教えてもらいました。
例えば、「a」と「b」が隣り合っているときは、基本的な書き方で別々に書きますが、「a」と「e」が隣り合っているときは「a」の右側の縦線と「e」の縦線を一緒に書くのだそうです。
日本の書道の場合は2つの文字を縦方向に（上から下へ）組み合わせるときに、最後の文字の終わりと次の文字の始まりを連続した線で一緒に書くことがあります（連綿線といいます）。Western calligraphyで文字を横に組み合わせる時に線を一緒に書く手法は、もしかしたら連綿線と似ているのかもしれませんね。非常に興味深いので、次回のレッスンでJeannetteさんに聞いてみたいと思います。
最後は実用。言葉を何種類か書きました（「友達」「おとぎ話」「すばやい茶色のきつね」など）。それから基本的な形をType styleで書いた後は、Serifフォントで使われているserifのような細い線を加えることができるとのこと。Jeannetteさんは「工夫して自由に書いていいのですよ」と優雅にクルクルと描いてくださいました。
なんとか真似してみようとトライしてみたものの、初心者なのでクリエイティブにアレンジするのはまだまだ難しいですね。
それにしてもWestern calligraphyのserifはエレガントでうっとりします！
