心如水 (Shin-wa-mizuno-gotoshi) : Mind as Water
ORIGIN
上善若水 水善利万物 而不争 処衆人之所悪 故幾於道 (Lao Tzu, Chapter 8)
上善若水: The best way to live is like a water.
水善利万物而不争: Water grows all things, and never fight.
処衆人之所悪: Water always puts itself in a low place.
故幾於道: Therefore, water is similar to a way.
INTERPRETATION
Water follows the shape of the vessel in which it is contained. If it is a square vessel, it will fit into a square, and if it is a round vessel, it will fit into a round. Water flows fast in the shallows of a river, and it flows slowly in the deep water of a river. However, it is still water essentially, same as human's mind doesn't change its essence. In other words, it can be interpreted as a metaphor for the way of being of the "mind" that responds to situations without no preference, rather than being stubborn, pushy, or pander to the others.

■由来
『上善若水。水善利万物、而不争。処衆人之所悪。故幾於道。』（『老子』第八章）
上善如水：最高の生き方は水のようなものだ。
水善利万物而不争：水は万物を育て、決して争わない。
処衆人之所悪： 水はいつも自分を低いところに置く。
故幾於道： 故に、水は道に似ている。
■解釈
水は、入っている容器の形に従います。四角い器であれば四角に、丸い器であれば丸に収まります。水は、川の浅瀬では速く流れ、川の深みではゆっくりと流れます。しかし、本質的には水であることに変わりはなく、人間の心も本質的には変わらないのと同じです。つまり、頑固になったり、強引になったり、周りに迎合したりするのではなく、状況に応じて好き嫌いなく対応する「心」の在り方の比喩と解釈できます。
★大筆も十分に墨を付けることができる硯型の墨汁入れ。とても便利です。
